gifts in kind.

last week, alex and i headed to alexandria’s douglas macarthur school for an event with gifts in kind international. gifts in kind (a.k.a. giki) distributes corporate product donations to nonprofits -- in this case, borders donated a ton of amazing books to the school’s aftercare program. each child was given their own book; they had a blast reading everyone’s favorite, “where the wild things are”, and, of course, the magical dr. seuss. how did he rhyme EVERYTHING?

i love coffee.

true story. especially during the warmer months -- there's nothing like an iced latte (from panera, obviously) and a pumpkin muffie (only the top of the muffin containing all of the delicious sugary goodness.) in fact, that was this morning's breakfast.

now, to the point: georgetown's
saxby's coffee (on the corner of o st. nw and 35th st. nw) has chosen yours truly as their featured artist! so if you have a minute, and are in need of a caffeine fix (who isn't?) head on over and check it out!

transitional housing corporation.

“dc is the jurisdiction with the highest child poverty rate in the united states, with more than 3 out of 10 children (32%) living in poverty...” national center for children in poverty: low-income children in the united states: national and state trend data, 1995-2005; u.s. census bureau, 2005 american community survey.

early yesterday morning, jon and i met up with brittany from the transitional housing corporation - a nonprofit organization aiding families moving from homelessness to self-sufficiency - for a photo shoot with shamekia and her son. shamekia works in the health care industry and tirelessly helps others less fortunate than herself - often going way beyond the call of duty. not surprisingly, her son isn’t much different. he’s constantly helping his classmates -- and yet, still manages to make the honor roll! this adorable mother-son team are clearly on their way to bigger and better things. shamekia is an amazing mother and i’m so thankful there’s a place like thc to provide her with the support her family deserves.

yesterday was a day of firsts for ben. jon and i met ben and his family in old town yesterday for his one-year birthday shoot. he ate his very first cupcake (omg). he also experienced the magic of gloves. he’s still working on the walking thing, but is a champ at throwing his hands in the air when he hears “no hands!” so. cute.
